Volgens Homerus is Aphrodite de dochter van Zeus en nimf Dione. Anderen menen dat zij de dochter is van Uranus en godin van de dag, Hemera.
Weer anderen geloven dat Aphrodite is voortgekomen uit het schuim van de zee. Dit zou gebeurd zijn toen Uranus geslachtsgemeenschap wilde hebben met de aarde (Gaea). Zijn zoon Cronus wilde dit voorkomen en castreerde hem met een sikkel. Uranus’ geslachtsdeel kwam terecht in zee en rond het lid ontwikkelde zich schuim waaruit een al volwassen Aphrodite tevoorschijn kwam. De windgod Zephyros blies haar in een schelp naar Cyprus. In de klassieke oudheid stond de schelp symbool voor de vagina.

According to Homer, Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus and the nymph Dione. Others believe she is the daughter of Uranus and goddess of the day, Hemera.
Still others believe that Aphrodite emerged from the foam of the sea. This is said to have happened when Uranus wanted to have sexual intercourse with the Earth (Gaea). His son Cronus wanted to prevent this and castrated him with a sickle. Uranus’ genitals ended up in the sea and foam developed around the member from which an already adult Aphrodite emerged. The wind god Zephyros blew her in a shell to Cyprus. In classical antiquity, the shell symbolized the vagina.
