Prometheus werd bekend als een helper van de mensheid. Speciaal voor de mens roofde hij vuur uit de hemel. Dit kwam de mensenhelper duur te staan, want Zeus was razend en liet Prometheus voor straf met onbreekbare ketenen vastbinden aan een rots in de Kaukasus. Iedere dag werd zijn lever er door een adelaar uitgerukt, waarna het orgaan ’s nachts weer aangroeide om vervolgens weer uit zijn lichaam gerukt te kunnen worden. Deze straf zou eeuwig duren… Dat was althans de bedoeling. Na 30.000 jaar bevrijdde de held Heracles de Titaan Prometheus uiteindelijk uit zijn ketenen. Heracles schoot de roofvogel uit de lucht met zijn pijl en boog waardoor Prometheus eindelijk kon ontkomen.

Prometheus became known as a helper of mankind. He stole fire from heaven especially for man. This cost the human helper dearly, for Zeus was furious and had Prometheus bound with unbreakable chains to a rock in the Caucasus as punishment. Every day his liver was torn out by an eagle, after which the organ grew again at night and then could be ripped out of his body again. This punishment would last forever… At least that was the intention. After 30,000 years, the hero Heracles finally freed the Titan Prometheus from his chains. Heracles shot the bird of prey from the sky with his bow and arrow, allowing Prometheus to finally escape.
