De Akropolis van Athene is de 156 meter hoge tafelberg in de Griekse hoofdstad, oorspronkelijk door een vruchtbare vlakte omringd, op veilige en toch niet verre afstand van zee gelegen, die zich bij uitstek leende tot een nederzetting. Door de ligging is de Akropolis  van kilometers ver te zien voor wie Athene nadert. Akropolis is een samenvoeging van ἄκρος (‘akros’, ‘hoogste deel van’) en πόλις (‘polis’, ‘stad’).

The Acropolis of Athens is the 156 meter high table mountain in the Greek capital, originally surrounded by a fertile plain, located at a safe yet not far distance from the sea, which lent itself pre-eminently to a settlement. Due to its location, the Acropolis  can be seen from miles away for those who approach Athens. Acropolis is a combination of ἄκρος (‘akros’, ‘highest part of’) and πόλις (‘polis’, ‘city’).
