GALATEIA (Galatea) was een van de vijftig Nereïden en de godin van de kalme zeeën.

Ze bezocht de kust van Sicilië en trok daar de aandacht van de Kyklops (Cyclops) Polyphemos. De reus joeg haar het hof met deuntjes van zijn rustieke pijpen en offergaven van melk en kaas. Maar de nimf wees zijn avances af en ging in plaats daarvan om met een knappe Siciliaanse jongen genaamd Akis (Acis). Polyphemos ontstak in een jaloerse woede en verpletterde de jongen onder een rots. Galateia was overmand door verdriet en veranderde Akis in een stroom. Volgens sommigen was Galateia de moeder van Polyphemos van Galatos, de gelijknamige koning van Galatië in Anatolië.

GALATEIA (Galatea) was one of the fifty Nereides and the goddess of calm seas.

She frequented the coast of Sicily and there attracted the attention of the Kyklops (Cyclops) Polyphemos. The giant wooed her with tunes from his rustic pipes and offerings of milk and cheese. But the nymphe spurned his advances and consorted instead with a handsome Sicillian youth named Akis (Acis). Polyphemos flew into a jealous rage and crushed the boy beneath a rock. Galateia was grief-stricken and transformed Akis into a stream. According to some Galateia was the mother by Polyphemos of Galatos, eponymous king of Galatia in Anatolia.
