Korinthe is volgens de Griekse mythologie gesticht door Sisyphos die ook de eerste koning werd van deze stad. In de klassieke oudheid was Korinthe een zeer belangrijke stadstaat, die verschillende kolonies stichtte in de Middellandse Zee, waaronder Syracuse op Sicilië. De stad had een strategische positie doordat zij een verbinding vormde tussen Attika met Athene en de Peloponnesos, met onder meer Sparta. Ook de handel van de stad floreerde vanwege deze gunstige positie. De Romeinen verwoestten de stad na een belegering in 146 v.Chr.

According to Greek mythology, Corinth was founded by Sisyphos who also became the first king of this city. In classical antiquity, Corinth was a very important city-state, which founded several colonies in the Mediterranean, including Syracuse in Sicily. The city had a strategic position because it formed a connection between Attica with Athens and the Peloponnese, including Sparta. The city’s trade also flourished because of this favorable position. The Romans destroyed the city after a siege in 146 BC.
