Icarus is  de zoon van architect en beeldhouwer Daedalus (de man die onder meer het labyrint ontwierp waarin de Minotaurus leefde). De jongen werd beroemd vanwege zijn tragische poging om te vliegen.

Icarus en zijn vader worden gevangen gehouden op Kreta door koning Minos. De twee willen ontsnappen. De kunstige Daedalus bouwt hierom op een raamwerk grote vleugels. Als de vleugels klaar zijn bevestigt hij de vleugels op zijn lichaam en op het lichaam van zijn zoon.

Daedalus waarschuwt Icarus niet te dicht bij de zon te komen. Hij is bang dat de was waarmee de vleugels op het lichaam zijn bevestigd door de hitte van de zon zal smelten. Icarus wordt echter overmoedig en vliegt almaar hoger en hoger. Tot hij te dicht bij de zon komt en de angst van zijn vader terecht blijkt: de was smelt en Icarus stort neer in zee.

Icarus is the son of architect and sculptor Daedalus (the man who, among other things, designed the labyrinth in which the Minotaur lived).

Icarus and his father are held captive in Crete by King Minos. The two want to escape. The artful Daedalus therefore builds large wings on a framework. When the wings are ready, he attaches the wings to his body and to his son’s body.

Daedalus warns Icarus not to get too close to the sun. He fears that the heat of the sun will melt the wax that secures the wings to the body. However, Icarus becomes overconfident and flies higher and higher. Until he gets too close to the sun and his father’s fear turns out to be justified: the wax melts and Icarus crashes into the sea.
