De Pietà betekent “medelijden”, “medeleven” en is een onderwerp in de christelijke kunst dat de Heilige Maagd Maria afbeeldt die het sterfelijke lichaam van Jezus Christus wiegt na zijn kruisafneming. Het wordt meestal gevonden in de beeldhouwkunst. De Pietà is een specifieke vorm van de Bewening van Christus waarin over Jezus wordt gerouwd door het exclusieve voorrecht van de Maagd Maria alleen, terwijl ze haar “zesde verdriet” vertegenwoordigt.
The Pietà means “pity”, “compassion” and is a subject in Christian art that depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary cradling the mortal body of Jesus Christ after his descent from the cross. It is most commonly found in sculpture. The Pietà is a specific form of the Lamentation of Christ in which Jesus is mourned through the exclusive privilege of the Virgin Mary alone, while representing her “sixth sorrow”.
